Regardless of how much we wish it wasn't so, our pets can get sick or injured just like we can. Should you find that your faithful companion is hurt or feeling under the weather, knowing what to do and when to see the vet can make a huge difference in how quickly he recovers.

One important thing that you should always keep in mind is that dogs are animals, no matter how affectionate and intelligent they may seem. If a dog is sick or in pain, it may act in ways that it normally wouldn't. Many dog bites result from people bothering a dog that was injured, even though the dog normally wouldn't bite or snap. Use caution when approaching a sick or wounded animal to help prevent bites.

Below are lists of common ailments that your dog might suffer. In most cases, it's best to take your dog to the vet if you think he's sick; many symptoms can seem the same, and only the vet can tell you what's wrong for sure.
